The Project

the project

H2SCORE aims to demonstrate how hydrogen technologies can enable complex, resilient and low-carbon local energy systems, specifically tailored to Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) and local multi-energy microgrids.

The project develops and demonstrates an integrated Power-to-Hydrogen-to-Power (P2H2P) ecosystem, combining long-duration hydrogen storage with short-term flexibility solutions and multi-vector energy integration. The H2SCORE concept is based on a dual hydrogen architecture:

low-temperature
system

PEM electrolyser, metal hydride storage and PEM fuel cell for efficient power balancing and fast response

high-temperature
system

Based on a reversible Solid Oxide Cell (rSOC), operating with hydrogen and biomass-derived syngas, enabling combined power and heat generation and increased system flexibility

Objectives of the project

  • Round-trip efficiency (RTE) of the Low/High T P2H2P > 33/40%
  • SOEC/SOFC efficiency > 75/60%
  • MH tank volume < 20% if compared to pressurized storage at 350 bar
  • At least five types of biomasses used in the gasifier producing rSOC suitable syngas
  • Fast transient and warm startups in less than one minute
  • Annual efficiency of the Low/High PEMFC/SOFC > 50/55%
  • Maximisation of RES self-consumption > 95% thanks to proper management of FCH solutions
  • Increased REC revenues (+15%) capitalizing incentives and offering specific grid services to the DSO
  • More than 3000 hours operation of H2SCORE Assets
  • Increased REC revenues (+15%)
  • Maximisation of RES Self Consumption > 95%
  • More than 500 kg of Green H2 produced in demo campaign
  • No major failures of H2SCORE assets in demo campaign
  • Validation of the tools thanks to Quarona REC WP9 Campaign
  • Use of the tools for realization of 4 replication studies in Italy, Spain, Canada, Switzerland in different type/size/maturity of RECs
  • Social media awareness campaigns to generate 5000+ direct reaches/impressions, 300+ reactions/shares reaching out up to 1000+ EU citizens; 2 project videos
  • At least 6 open access papers and 10 conferences participations
  • Organization of 3 project events at local level and 2 at EU Level: overall interaction with >1000 Stakeholders
